HISTORY OF ASTROLOGY
Astrology's history spans thousands of years and cultures, beginning in ancient Mesopotamia around 3,000 BCE, when it was originally considered the same science as Astronomy. Babylonian astronomers tracked celestial movements and linked them to earthly events. The Egyptians, around 1,500 BCE, developed zodiac concepts and aligned their calendar with astronomical events. Western astrology is based on texts written by Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the second century BCE. These were preserved and expanded during the Islamic Golden Age (8th-14th centuries), when scholars enhanced predictive models based on astrological texts. During the Renaissance (12th–17th centuries), astrology was influenced by Arabic scholarship. Although the 18th and 19th centuries saw the rise of skepticism during the Enlightenment, new religious movements such as Spiritualism and Theosophy incorporated Astrology into their belief systems.
ASTROLOGY IN AMERICA
In the 20th century in America, during the 60’s hippie movement and “Age of Aquarius,“ astrology gained rapid popularity by being published in horoscope columns in magazines and newspapers. During the “New Age” movement of the 1970’s, astrology was part of a trend which focused on unconventional religions and mysticism. During the “yuppie” phase of the 80’s and 90’s, many young people were focused more on business and fitness. Today, research shows that Gen Z and Millennials believe that their zodiac sign accurately represents their personality traits, and gives them self-knowledge which helps make life decisions — from dating to career direction and even finances.
